
SEATTLE — Canada no longer ranks in the top 10 countries for mobile Internet download speeds, according to the latest report from Seattle-based broadband and mobile network testing company Ookla.
In its newest Speedtest Global Index report, released today, Ookla says Canada now ranks 19th overall for mobile Internet, with an average download speed of 85.91 Mbps. Download speeds in the top 10 countries range from 190.03 Mbps (United Arab Emirates) to 120.44 Mbps (Bulgaria), according to Ookla’s July 2021 data.
In 2019, Canada’s average download speeds gave it a sixth-place ranking and in 2020, an eighth place ranking. (Please see the chart.)
Ookla reported mobile download speeds jumped 59.5% over the last year globally, while fixed broadband speeds are up 31.9% when comparing July 2020 to July 2021.
In terms of fixed broadband, Canada ranks 19th compared to other countries, with an average download speed of 174.53 Mbps, according to Ookla. The top 10 countries’ download speeds range from 256.70 Mbps (Monaco) to 207.44 Mbps (Liechtenstein).
However, Canada’s average download speeds for mobile and fixed broadband are still higher than the global averages. According to Ookla’s July 2021 data, the mean download speeds globally for mobile and fixed broadband were 55.07 Mbps and 107.5 Mbps, respectively.
