CABLE-TEC 2010: Rogers’ O’Carroll shares chairman’s award

NEW ORLEANS – The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers kicked off the 2010 Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans in style by presenting its annual awards.

Bob Legg Jr., vice president, technical operations, Atlantic Region for Suddenlink Communications, was presented with the SCTE Member of the Year Award. Legg set and achieved the goal of having his entire team become certified in at least one of SCTE’s Certification Programs and this “keen interest in his team’s professional development involved every technical and engineering employee from each new hire to the 30-year veterans,” says the press release.

Legg is beginning his second term on the SCTE Board of Directors as Region 10 director.

Ron Hranac, technical leader, Cisco Systems, was inducted into the SCTE Hall of Fame. An authority on cable telecommunications technology, Hranac has been a prominent technical contributor over the years for participants on the SCTE-List. “In the spirit of the SCTE mission, Hranac is a prime example of what it means to be a technical leader and problem-solver,” says the release.

In 1991, he became the first Fellow member of SCTE. In 1987, he became the first person in the cable industry to be certified in SCTE’s BCT/E program. Also, Hranac is one of the founders of the SCTE Rocky Mountain Chapter.

SCTE Board of Directors Chairman Bob Foote presented his SCTE Chairman’s Award to the CTO Advisory Group, which comprises Nomi Bergman (Bright House), Jim Blackley (Cablevision), Terry Cordova (Suddenlink), Marwan Fawaz (Charter), Mike LaJoie (Time Warner Cable), Dermot O’Carroll (Rogers), Dan Pike (GCI), and Tony Werner (Comcast).

“The group has worked cohesively to ensure that SCTE becomes more relevant than ever to the changing, expanding needs of the cable telecommunications industry,” said Foote. “Their insights and guidance have been essential and have removed a lot of the guesswork involved in re-positioning SCTE for an exciting future.”

Industry consultant Wendell Woody received a special Distinguished Member of the Society Award. “Woody has particularly demonstrated his disarming and diplomatic spirit through his work over the years as co-chair of the SCTE Nominations Committee, which has the weighty responsibility of helping to determine the best slate of candidates for the annual SCTE Board of Directors Election,” says the release.

Independent Technology Analyst Leslie Ellis was presented with the Women in Technology Award. The award, sponsored by Bright House Networks, was created by Women in Cable Telecommunications, SCTE, and Communications Technology magazine. Ellis is a weekly columnist for Multichannel News and a moderator at SCTE events.
