OTTAWA – The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) today announced the finalists for the prestigious Gold Ribbon Awards, honouring excellence in private broadcasting. The awards will be presented during the CAB 2007 Convention in Ottawa on November 5th and 6th.
The Gold Ribbon Awards honour achievement in broadcasting in various categories including community service, breaking news, humour, public affairs, and promotion of Canadian talent. The CAB has again this year broken records for the number of entries received, with a total of 544 submissions – an increase of 5% over 2006. Radio and Specialty/Pay/Pay-per-view entries broke new records with a total of 223 and 258 submissions respectively, while 163 entries were received for the TV awards. After reviewing the entries, the judges selected 158 finalists in 33 categories.
“The record number of entries again this year is in itself a tribute to the incredible wealth of talent and commitment to excellence amongst our nominees,” said Glenn O’Farrell, President and CEO of the CAB. “ Canada’s private broadcasters have demonstrated again a very high level of creativity, with outstanding programming that entertains, informs and connects with Canadians in their own community.”
“Jury members were impressed by the uniqueness and high caliber of all the entries,” said Erica Benson, Chair of the Gold Ribbon Awards Judging Panel for the Television and Specialty/Pay/PPV services categories. “It really speaks to the level of commitment of Canada’s private broadcasting system,” she added.
“ The range of community involvement by broadcasters in large, medium and small markets is outstanding,” said Rick Holmes , Chair of the Gold Ribbon Awards Judging Panel for Radio categories.
