WINNIPEG – The CAB ended its two-day conference with a rocking mini-concert put on by Canadian music legends Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman.
After hearing Doc Walker and Eagle & Hawk (in between awards, the winners of which are outlined below) Cummings and Bachman (The Guess Who, BTO, etc.), Winnipeg natives who were inducted into the CAB Hall of Fame on Tuesday, played a four-song set and were coaxed into an encore, too.
How many times has your station played these favourites, which Cummings (on the piano, flute and vocals) and Bachman (on guitar and vocals) performed as a duo: No Sugar Tonight, Break it to them Gently, Takin’ Care of Business, Undun, and These Eyes? Thousands of times, maybe? More?
Here were the week’s award winners:
Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence
Michael MacMillan, Executive Chairman of Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. has been chosen as the recipient of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ 2005 Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence. The award honours truly outstanding service to Canadian private broadcasting, and recognizes exceptional human qualities and practical, innovative achievements that reflect a genuine concern for the highest broadcasting standards.
Mr. MacMillan has spent the majority of his distinguished career in the service of private broadcasting. In 1978, he co-founded Atlantis Films Limited, which later became Atlantis Communications Inc. In 1998, Atlantis Communications Inc. merged with Alliance Communications Corporation to become Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. Today, under Mr. MacMillan’s continued leadership, the company has grown tremendously and now operates 13 Canadian specialty television networks. Mr. MacMillan was awarded private broadcasting’s highest honour at the Hall of Fame Luncheon on Monday, November 7, in Winnipeg.
Gold Ribbon for Outstanding Community Service
Bob Hunter was posthumously awarded the Gold Ribbon Award for Outstanding Community Service by an Individual Broadcaster. Mr. Hunter was a vital part of Citytv Toronto’s newsroom as Ecology Specialist for over 17 years.
As co-founder of Greenpeace, Bob’s dedication to educating the community about environmental issues was a deeply personal one, and he used his position as a broadcaster to speak out on environmental concerns. Mr. Hunter’s ability to educate without preaching and his willingness to back up his words with action earned him recognition and respect both in Toronto and around the globe. Time Magazine has called him one of the top eco-heroes of the 20th century.
The Gold Ribbon Awards pay tribute to achievements in broadcasting in various categories including community service, breaking news, humour, public affairs and promotion of Canadian talent. A total of 457 submissions were received for the 2005 Gold Ribbon Awards.
