CAB 2006: Over 100 guest speakers, 23 sessions at this year’s convention


VANCOVUER – The 80th edition of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters annual convention will feature an impressive roster of keynote speakers, including B.C. premier Gordon Campbell, CRTC chair Charles Dalfen, Rick Hansen Foundation, president and CEO Rick Hansen; Bev Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, and many others.

The line-up of musicians performing at various times during the three days includes Colin James, Melissa McClelland, Delhi2Dublin, Alpha YaYa Diallo, Daniel Lavoie and Sarah McLachlan.

This year’s convention is booking up quickly, says the CAB, so if you haven’t already registered, it is encouraging members and others to do so today.

On Sunday, November 5th, the Convention kicks off with six special Business Sessions. Starting at 7:30 AM, the CAB will be presenting a special Breakfast with the Copyright Board for CAB members, followed by the CAB Copyright Update at 10:30 AM. Other Sunday sessions include a presentation by BBM on the roll-out of the new Portable People Meters (PPMs), an update by consultant Stephen Armstrong on the latest industry trends, and hands-on sessions by well-known industry trainer Michael Guld on the latest in TV and radio sales and marketing techniques.

On Monday, November 6th, the Convention will present eleven cutting-edge panels over the course of the day, beginning with the opening plenary, Talking Broadband. Later that morning, four sessions will examine content creation in the wired and wireless environment, the latest developments in mobile TV, new platforms for conventional radio, and the new realities facing Canada’s specialty and pay television sector.

On Monday afternoon, the Convention will feature sessions on digital rights management, the future of radio, video-on-demand, and HDTV, as well as a plenary session on the “ Gadgeteer” generation. A perennial favourite, the CAB/CRTC Small Market Face-to-Face , which provides CAB members with a unique opportunity to meet directly with senior representatives of the Commission, closes out Monday’s program.

A high-powered plenary session on the new regulatory equation kicks off a full day of sessions on Tuesday, November 7th. Later that morning, four break-out panels take a look at talk radio , the new realities of advertising , the upcoming CRTC Review of Commercial Television, and what our top financial analysts think about the future of conventional broadcasting.

On Tuesday afternoon, the CAB presents a special Convention closing plenary session, The Relevance of Media. Moderated by Kevin Newman, anchor and executive editor of Global National, this session takes a look at the rapidly changing relationship between broadcasters and consumers, and the new rules of the game that will be required to keep conventional television, radio and specialty & pay TV at the centre of the action in the years to come.
