HALIFAX – Shaw and Global News have made a three-year commitment to offer financial and broadcast support to assist key community and youth-focused organizations in Halifax. This includes an immediate donation of $150,000 in monetary and in-kind broadcast support to help local youth at risk within Halifax’s north end.
Coinciding with today’s official opening of Global News’ new broadcast centre and studio at 2110 Gottingen Street, the initiative will continue throughout a three-year period with the goal of helping those in need within the organization’s new North End neighbourhood.
“When the decision was made to move our studio, we knew immediately that we had an opportunity to help grow and perpetuate positive change within the city’s North End,” says Jim Haskins, Global Maritimes Station Manager & News Director. “An overall commitment to community development is something both Shaw and Global News holds very highly. We are humbled to contribute in whatever way we can, and look forward to developing new bonds and forging new relationships with our North End neighbours.”
Shaw and Global News’ North End charitable program will begin by making donations to two worthwhile causes in the area:
Phoenix – A not-for-profit, community-based organization, Phoenix provides programs designed to help at-risk and homeless youths with the opportunities they need to succeed. A recognized leader in providing ground-breaking, motivational initiatives, Phoenix aims to help youth by offering services that inspire them to reach their full potential, while creating a healthy and vibrant community overall.

North End Business Association’s 2013 North End Youth Week – With a mandate towards helping disaffected youth in the area, this week-long event and activities targeted towards youths at risk of leaving school early. Launching this Spring, the North End Youth Week will provide a range of activities, including Karate and archery, to voice and drama class, and business courses. The week-long event aims to show that positive results can come out of offering decent programming to youths who are positively engaged.

Shaw and Global News’ charitable commitment to the area will continue functioning with an overarching focus to assess other youth needs and initiatives within Halifax’s North End. Shaw says it is committed to telling stories and reflecting on issues of most importance to the area, with the local Global News management team continuing to put a spotlight on those most need of support.
