CALGARY, MONTREAL and VANCOUVER – Canada’s communications industry is digging deep to help support relief efforts in Nepal after last Saturday’s devastating earthquake.
Shaw Communications said Tuesday that it will match employee donations to the Canadian Red Cross dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 to help provide critical supplies and aid in rescue and recovery efforts. Aligning with the Federal Government's donation matching program, every dollar donated by Shaw employees could be matched twice, resulting in three dollars of aid to Nepal.
In addition, all Shaw Phone customers will receive complimentary long distance calling to Nepal until May 25, and Shaw TV customers have free access to Indian-based English-language news channel ATN NDTV 24/7 through May 6, 2015 for local coverage of the region.
Telus tweeted that it, too, is donating $100,000 in humanitarian grants to support aid relief in the area, plus is waiving the cost of customers’ calls and texts to and from Nepal for the next two weeks.
In a gesture of support for Québec residents affected by the disaster, Videotron is waiving the costs of its customers’ calls to Nepal from their residential landlines and mobiles from April 25 through May 31. The calls will either not be billed or will be credited on customers’ invoices issued after May 1.
