VANCOUVER – A new Ipsos Reid poll has found that the majority of British Columbia residents strongly support the new proposed legislation that will ban cell phone usage while driving as of January 1, 2010.
A strong majority of residents say that they support the ban (92%), while three-quarters of the population say that they “strongly support” it (75%).
Approximately one-third (34%) of respondents said that they believe that the provincial government should have gone one step further to also prohibit the use of hands-free devices while driving. Older residents, (45% of respondents aged 55 and up), were much more likely to agree with this compared to their younger counterparts.
The on-line poll was conducted between October 29th and November 6th, 2009 with a representative sample of 758 adult British Columbians.
