Bill Roberts begins his climb for literacy today

NUNAVIK, QUEBEC – Retired broadcasting executive Bill Roberts begins his epic 250-km wilderness trek for literacy today, as he starts his climb up Mount Caubvick to raise awareness for Frontier College and its mission to improve literacy rates across Canada.

Situated on the border between Labrador and Quebec and an impressive 1,652 metres in height, Mount Caubvick (or Mont D’Iberville as it’s known in Quebec) is the tallest peak in mainland Eastern Canada; but it’s not the tallest peak Roberts has ever climbed. The avid mountaineer has already reached the summit of some of the world’s greatest peaks, including Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe; Mount Whitney, the highest in the contiguous U.S.; and Alberta's Mount Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies.

“It’s a challenge to climb mountains big and small, but it’s an even greater challenge to make your way in this world if you don’t have fundamental and basic literacy skills,” Roberts said in an interview with CBC Radio Newfoundland & Labrador earlier this week.

You can follow Roberts’ journey on Frontier College’s Twitter feed (@FrontierCollege) or Facebook page. Frontier College president and CEO Sherry Campbell writes in an email that Roberts’ climb has raised almost $5,000.  If you would like to support Roberts’ climb for literacy, click here to make a donation to Frontier College.
