MONTREAL — During Bell Let’s Talk Day in January 2022, Bell Media’s French-language Canal Vie, Crave and Noovo.ca will simultaneously broadcast a new documentary, Maman, pourquoi tu pleures? (Mom, Why Are You Crying?), Bell Media announced today.
“This powerful documentary will open a pandora’s box on the mental health of mothers during the perinatal period, a reality that is still too taboo, little discussed at present and which affects entire families,” reads an English translation of Bell Media’s press release.
The 60-minute documentary is an original idea by Quebec actress Jessica Barker (pictured above).
“The mental health of pregnant women and new mothers is very poorly understood,” says Barker, in the release. “Why is this still the case today? After hearing the testimony of a neighbour, I asked myself a lot of questions… It is everyone’s duty to break the taboos surrounding perinatal mental health.”
For the documentary, Barker will meet mothers struggling with mental health problems as well as mental health workers and specialists. Those sharing their stories include Jean-Philippe Dion, Cathy Gauthier and author Sarah Rodrigue.
“Perinatal mental health is a problem that has repercussions on everyone: mothers, spouses, children, the immediate entourage,” said Mélanie Bhérer, general manager of variety, lifestyle and documentary at Bell Media.
“We are convinced that the documentary will have an impact and that it will make a difference. It fits in perfectly with Bell Let’s Talk Day.”
Maman, pourquoi tu pleures? is directed by Patricia Beaulieu and produced by Trinome & Filles, in collaboration with Bell Media.
