TORONTO – Bell Subco, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bell Canada, is training hundreds of students hired for the summer to help break a legal strike by installation and repair technicians who have been on the picket line since early April, says the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union.
Bob Huget, Ontario administrative vice-president of CEP Canada, called the tactics "outrageous" and called on Bell to immediately stop the practice.
“We have nothing against Bell hiring temporary summer students as has been their practice for years," Mr. Huget said. "What we object to is their use as scabs against our members. As far as we know, the students are not being told in advance of the situation."
The 1,400 CEP members across Ontario, working under the Entourage banner, are on strike for benefits and other conditions equal to those already paid by the company to its own employees, says the union’s release.
