TORONTO – CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada is providing Punjabi broadcasts for 55 games from its 2008-09 schedule at CBCSports.ca, as announced prior to the start of the NHL regular season.
Rogers and Bell TV have also been providing games to its subscribers, and starting Nov. 1, Shaw Digital Cable will also be making the Punjabi broadcasts available to its customers.
CBC’S Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi broadcast package provides Canadians with two games each Saturday night in Punjabi – including the 57th NHL All-Star Game in Montreal on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 – for the 2008-09 regular season.
In addition to CBCSports.ca, the Punjabi games are also available free to Bell TV subscribers on channel 249 and free to Rogers digital cable subscribers in Ontario and New Brunswick on channel 401. Beginning Nov. 1, the broadcasts will also be available free to most Shaw Digital Cable subscribers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba (Shaw Cable customers will need to check the Interactive Program Guide for channel assignment). Parminder Singh, host of Omni Television’s Punjabi-language program Chardi Kalaa, handles play-by-play for the Punjabi language broadcasts, working alongside analyst Harnarayan Singh, a freelance reporter with CBC Radio in Calgary. Parminder and Harnarayan also provided play-by-play for the Punjabi language broadcasts during the 2008 Stanley Cup Final.
