Bell MTS expanding fibre connectivity in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Bell MTS said Tuesday it is expanding its fibre network into six more rural communities and connecting more than 7,500 new locations in Manitoba starting this summer.

The latest expansion will bring fibre connections to East St. Paul, Gimli, Headingley, Ste. Anne, Teulon, and West St. Paul, Bell said in a press release, and will include download speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps.

The company said it has surpassed $1.3 billion in expenditures since 2017 in the province and has accelerated the rollout of fibre, 5G, and fixed wireless internet. The company said it has invested roughly $400 million to bring fibre to Winnipeg, the largest telecom project in the province’s history, it said.

“As we continue to make major investments in improving and expanding our broadband infrastructure in Manitoba and across the country, we look forward to working collaboratively with public policy makers to ensure fewer Canadians are left behind as we build more inclusive, connected communities for all of us,” Bell CEO Mirko Bibic said in the release.

Parts of Manitoba are known to have extremely poor connectivity relative to the rest of the country.
