MONTREAL – Bell now has one million subscribers to its Bell Mobile TV service, the company said Tuesday.
The wireless data service is available as a bonus with many Bell Mobility data plans, allowing customers with a smartphone and a data plan 10 hours of mobile TV viewing as a $5 a month add-on, without affecting the data allotment in their plan. The service offers access to more than 40 channels of live and on-demand sports, news, entertainment and children's TV programming, though Bell TV customers may access more than 100 channels.
The company credits the service's growth to the viewing to live broadcasts, particularly major live sporting events including the NHL Playoffs and Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, NBA Playoffs, NCAA March Madness, and the Olympic Games.
"Live broadcasts are a key driver for mobile TV, led by Canada's and the world's biggest sporting events but also the major awards shows, TV season finales and special events like the Toronto International Film Festival that people want to watch wherever they may be," said Bell Mobility president Wade Oosterman, in the press release. "Bell Mobile TV is uniquely easy to access too – Bell enables customers to watch mobile TV without impacting their regular data usage."
