TORONTO – Bell Media joined broadcasters and industry bodies around the world Thursday in marking the 17th annual World Television Day.
An initiative set in place by the United Nations in 1996, #WorldTVDay recognizes the role of television in helping shape modern democracy, freedom of expression, and cultural diversity.
All day Thursday, Bell Media’s array of television properties aired the official World Television Day public service announcement, featuring people of all ages and nationalities watching television content – from entertainment to news, to culture, education and drama – on different devices. Broadcasters across Europe, Asia, Australia and the U.S. also previously confirmed their participation to air the clip on November 21.
“The role of television far eclipses the notion of providing fodder for water cooler conversations – TV is woven into every aspect of life and culture,” said president Kevin Crull, in the news release. “From arts and entertainment, music and science, to history, sports, documentaries, and news, television is a binding force that brings people together, and ultimately serves as a beacon for freedom of expression and cultural diversity. We are gratefully honoured to play a role in this transcendent medium and deliver on our mandate to entertain, inform, inspire, and engage our audiences.”
