Bell Media hires former Snap Canada exec Matt McGowan for new SVP of business solutions role

Bell Media announced Tuesday the appointment of Matt McGowan to the newly created position of senior vice president of business solutions for Bell Media, effective today.

McGowan joins Bell Media having most recently served as the managing director and general manager for Snap Inc. in Canada, where he helped to advance the tech company’s business (Snapchat, Spectacles, Bitmoji) in the country. Based in Toronto, McGowan led all of Snap’s Canadian employees “and spearheaded the overall market strategy and execution, driving significant audience expansion and top-line revenue growth,” says a Bell Media press release announcing his hiring.

In his new role at Bell Media, McGowan will oversee the strategy and execution of advertising sales and partnerships for the media company.

“Matt is a focused, forward-thinking leader with a proven ability to cultivate a high performing team culture and drive business results,” Sean Cohan, Bell Media president, said in a statement. “I look forward to collaborating with Matt as Bell Media continues to transform from leading Canadian broadcaster to digital media and content leader with global impact, while prioritizing our broad Canadian audience and our valued partners.”

“I’m honoured to build on the work of those who came before me, and excited to learn from Sean Cohan and the exceptional team shaping the future of Canada’s largest media and entertainment company,” McGowan said Tuesday in a post on LinkedIn. “In this time of rapid change, there’s no better moment to invest in Canada — its people, its culture, and its potential. Bell is uniquely positioned to lead, and I’m proud to now be part of that journey.”

McGowan has nearly three decades of experience in the global media and technology industries. Prior to working at Snap, he was president of the advanced marketing automation platform Adestra. Before that, he was head of advertising strategy for Google, a time during which he moved from New York to Toronto to take on a role focused on growing Google’s Canadian advertising business.

McGowan currently serves on the board of advisors for Visa, and the board of directors for IAB Canada and New York-based advertising agency StrawberryFrog. He also previously served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. He has been a mentor for several organizations including Techstars, Elevate Canada and ADWEEK.
