Bell Media acquires Canadian rights to ‘Saturday Night Live’

Bell Media announced Monday it has secured a deal with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution that will make CTV and Crave the new Canadian home for sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) starting this fall.

SNL’s 52nd season will air in simulcast exclusively on CTV and stream live on Crave via the live CTV channel, and will also be available to stream on demand next day on Crave.

Corus Entertainment has long held the Canadian broadcast rights to NBC’s late-night comedy series, with the show’s 51st season currently airing in simulcast on Global TV and streaming via StackTV.

“Crave and CTV are proud to be the new home of Saturday Night Live in Canada,” Justin Stockman, vice president of global content at Bell Media, said in a press release. “A proven hit for over 50 years, the series has always been at the vanguard of pop culture, setting the tone for modern humour. We will be enjoying alongside viewers when the new season premieres on Crave and CTV.”

Crave currently offers subscribers its Saturday Night Live Collection, a library of legendary SNL episodes from past seasons. Bell Media’s streamer also recently announced the acquisition of Saturday Night Live UK, the British adaptation of the late-night franchise, which debuted in Canada exclusively on Crave on March 21.

Created and executive produced by Toronto-born Lorne Michaels, Saturday Night Live is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Broadway Video in association with SNL Studios.

Sarah Weaver, director of content, acquisitions and sales for Bell Media, negotiated the deal with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution.
