Bell lets customers put it in the vault

TORONTO – Digital media is great, but what if you drop your iPod in the pool or a power surge fries your laptop? If you haven’t backed up your files, they’re gone.

To help make backing up a little easier, Bell Canada announced today the availability of the Personal Vault, a new online storage solution that aims to let customers back up, access and share vital and important personal information including digital photos, financial records, music, and video files.

"Our customers have been telling us they want a safe place to store their valuable digital photos and music with an ability to easily access this information from any Internet connection." said Charlotte Burke, president, Sympatico, in a press release. "Bell has met this growing need with a solution that enables them to safely store and share their personal content with friends and family."

As media libraries grow, personal computers (PCs) are being used increasingly by individuals and families as a home for precious photo memories, music, video, and financial files. Personal Vault has been designed by Sympatico to allow High Speed Internet users to safely backup, access and share important and often vulnerable data from any Internet-connected computer.

"Unlike alternative backup solutions such as burning files to CD or DVD, Personal Vault provides the peace of mind that important data will always be automatically backed-up and protected from loss, corruption, and theft," added Burke.

Sympatico is the first major ISP in Canada to offer this service. The monthly cost for Sympatico subscribers is $6 for 3 gigabytes of storage. Additional storage is available for $4 per month for each additional 3 gigabytes. Customers who are not Bell Sympatico subscribers can also purchase Personal Vault service for $7 a month for 3 gigabytes of storage and $5 per month for each additional 3 gigabytes.

The features include:

* 3 GB of space, enough for approximately 3,000 photos or 600 music files;
* Automatic scheduling of content backup for secure storage;
* Access to Personal Vault from any computer connected to the Internet;
* The ability to password protect contents, and share specific files with colleagues, friends or family;
* An easy option to send photos to retailers for professional photofinishing.
