Bell Fund names top 10 new media groundbreakers


TORONTO – The Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund this week selected the “Top 10 New Media Groundbreakers” to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

The Top 10 Groundbreakers, as selected by an international jury of new media experts and industry leaders, are: www.angelaa.com (produced by Decode Entertainment Inc. for Teletoon), www.cornemuse.com (produced by Telefiction Productions inc. for Tele-Quebec), www.deafplanet.com (produced by marblemedia interactive inc. for TVO), www.degrassi.tv (produced by Epitome Pictures Inc. and Snap Media Inc. for CTV), www.extremis.tv (produced by Macumba International inc. for Tele-Quebec), www.madeinmtl.com (produced by Bluesponge inc. for Locomotion Television inc., CTV and TV5), www.regenesistv.com (produced by Shaftesbury Films and Xenophile Media for TMN and the Movie Central), www.renegadepress.com (produced by Verite Films Inc. and OH Media Inc. for APTN, TVO, SCN, Access, Book TV, Knowledge and TFO), www.zimmertwins.ca (produced by Zinc Roe Design inc. for Teletoon) and www.11somerset.com (produced by Trinome inc. for Tele-Quebec and CHUM).

The recipients include new media productions that have had a significant impact and contributed to the advancement of the Canadian cross-platform new media industry over the past decade.

Eco-Nova Productions in Halifax, NS received an honourable mention for its work on shipwreckcentral.com, broadcast on History Television.

The seven-person jury included: Frank Boyd, Founder, Unexpected Media, www.unexpectedmedia.com, UK; Ron Burnett, president of the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, www.eciad.ca; Scott Colborne, of the Globe and Mail; Herve Fischer, associate professor at UQAM and founding director of the Observatoire international du numerique; Domenic Friguglietti, manager of International Projects, ABC International Division, Australia; Gary Smith, president of Bell ExpressVu and Steve Tilley of SunMedia.

“The last 10 years are representative of the coming of age of the new media industry and Canada has played a significant part in driving this blossoming industry forward, not only at home, but around the world,” said Paul Hoffert, chair of the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund. “The Bell Fund is proud to recognize 10 world-class projects that, over the past decade, have helped to shape the face of new media in Canada while also setting the stage for future innovation.”
