MONTREAL – Videotron, Bell and Cogeco were quick to jump on the CRTC-commissioned broadband report that determined that Internet service providers (ISPs) largely meet or exceed their advertised download and upload speeds.

In a statement, Videotron noted that the report found that its actual download speeds averaged 106% of its advertised speeds between March 15 – April 14, 2016, when the data was collected, and upload speeds were 103% of the advertised speeds.

"Videotron has been an Internet trailblazer: we were pioneers more than 20 years ago and were among the first to offer high-speed service in Québec. Year after year, our constant goal is to offer reliable, high-performance, always-on Internet access service that meets consumers' needs and expectations”, said president and CEO Manon Brouillette, in the statement.  “The results released today show once again that we are giving consumers and businesses the speeds they expect and delivering on our promise to the customers who place their trust in us day after day."

That was followed by a statement by Bell, which patted itself on the back for its all-fibre broadband Fibe network.  The report found that Bell's Fibe service exceeded advertised download speeds by a greater margin than other ISPs tested across Canada, and that FTTH services like Fibe offer the lowest levels of latency and packet loss.

"Bell is focused on delivering the best broadband communications experience possible to Canadians, enabling them to make the most of the latest Internet, wireless and TV services. These independent tests prove that Bell's strategy to lead investment and innovation in broadband is delivering advanced networks that consistently outperform in speed and reliability," said group president of BCE and Bell Canada, and Bell's chief brand officer Wade Oosterman.  "Canadians can be justifiably proud that our country's broadband fibre and wireless networks rank among the fastest and best in the world."

Cogeco posted performance levels exceeding 100% in upload and download speeds during peak and regular hours, as well as speedy web page downloading times, which the company described as “a level of performance superior to that posted by the category of suppliers that are offering fibre to the home”.

"We salute the initiative of the CRTC”, said Cogeco Connexion VP marketing and innovation Daniel Boisvert, in that company’s statement.  “It confirms to Cogeco clients the quality of the Internet services they enjoy and which we make available to them, as we pursue our commitment to peerless customer service and a flexible offering that meets their needs."
