
OTTAWA – The federal government today announced $1.1 million in funding has been awarded to connect more rural households in Newfoundland and Labrador to high-speed Internet.
Bell Canada is to receive $286,155 to bring high-speed Internet to the communities of Northern Arm, Phillips Head and Point of Bay.
Bell’s all-fibre network has been available in these communities since February, a Bell spokesperson told Cartt.ca via email.
Burgeo Broadcasting System is to receive $793,275 to bring high-speed Internet to the communities of Codroy, Loch Lomond, Grey River, François, McDougalls, South Branch, St. Andrew’s, Tompkins, Upper Ferry, North Branch, Woodville, Searston, Shoal Point (Cape Anguille), Coal Brook, and The Block.
This project is expected to be completed by Nov. 15, David MacDonald, manager of Burgeo Broadcasting System told Cartt.ca.
These projects are being funded as part of the rapid response stream of the federal government’s Universal Broadband Fund.
In total, 625 households are to be connected through these projects. Bell has connected 271 households while Burgeo Broadcasting System will connect 354 households, according to a spokesperson for the Office of the Minister of Rural Economic Development.
