Bell banks on Sidney Crosby

VANCOUVER – Bell Canada will double Olympic hockey hero Sidney Crosby’s gold medal winnings in a charitable donation to the Sidney Crosby Foundation.

The Foundation, created Crosby’s home province of Nova Scotia in 2009, provides financial support to charities that are beneficial to the community as a whole, specifically charities benefitting children.  Bell said Wednesday that it will match Crosby’s $20,000 donation.

"Bell is so proud of the accomplishments of each and every athlete who competed at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games," said Loring Phinney, Bell’s VP of Olympic and corporate marketing, in the announcement. "As part of our legacy to our athletes as well as to these Games, we wish to support their dedication not only to their sport but to local communities wherever we can. When we heard what Sidney was doing we knew that supporting his initiative was the right thing to do."

The move comes after Bell pledged to match the $10,000 donation made by bronze medal speed skater Clara Hughes to ‘Take a Hike’, a Vancouver-based organization that engages at-risk youth through adventure-based learning, academics, counseling and community involvement.
