HALIFAX- Bell Aliant is investing $2.75 million to bring its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services to 5,600 homes and businesses in Gander, Newfoundland later this month.
"Gander's culture is deeply rooted in a tradition of innovation – and fibre-optic technology is like jet fuel for economic growth," said Claude Elliott, Mayor of Gander. "This infrastructure enables the global connectivity essential for drawing smart businesses, attracting investment and fostering Gander's reputation as a regional technology hub."
In Newfoundland, FibreOPTM is currently available in St. John's and Mount Pearl with builds recently announced in Corner Brook and Grand Falls-Windsor. In 2012, Bell Aliant has also announced builds in Edmundston, Grand Falls, Woodstock, Sussex, Hampton and Campbellton in New Brunswick; Yarmouth, Bridgewater, Antigonish and Digby in Nova Scotia; and Sudbury in Ontario.
"Consumers want more out of their TV and Internet experience. We're meeting their demands today and in the future with social TV apps, great on demand content and the fastest Internet in the market," says Andre LeBlanc, Vice President, Residential Markets, Bell Aliant.
Bell Aliant says its FibreOP network offers whole home PVR, the most HD movies on demand, and a library of social TV apps including Twitter, Facebook, The Weather Network and Galaxie Music. It claims FibreOP offers Atlantic Canada the fastest Internet speeds with download speeds of up to 250 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 30 Mbps.
The company says it was the first in Canada to cover an entire city with fibre-to-the-home. By the end of 2012, it estimates it will have invested approximately half a billion dollars to extend fibre-optic technology to approximately 650,000 homes and businesses in its territory.
