TORONTO – Calling it the fastest mobile network ever commercialized, Bell Canada today announced the rollout of its EV-DO data network in Ottawa, Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville, Ont. Bell also announced a roaming agreement with Aliant for EV-DO service in Halifax.
Bell Mobility already offers high-speed wireless EV-DO access in Vancouver, Whistler, Calgary, Edmonton, Brandon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Quebec City, Mont-Tremblant, and Montreal.
“Bell’s investment in EV-DO means that wireless broadband is expanding coverage at unprecedented speeds by any measure,” said Jim Jaques, Senior Vice President Business Marketing and Sales, Bell Mobility. “In just six months we are able to offer the majority of urban Canadians wireless broadband.”
The EV-DO (EVolution Data Optimized) data network uses third-generation wireless networks technology to deliver data at download rates of up to 2.4 megabits per second, the equivalent of broadband speeds on mobile wireless devices. A 1 MB file can take 20 seconds to download, compared with two minutes on non-EV-DO networks, Bell says.
“Canada is a country on the move, and Bell Canada has optimized high-speed wireless no matter what major city you do business in or travel to,” said Jaques. “Bell Canada is delivering what our customers from coast-to-coast want: the freedom of true mobility.”
Bell also announced it’s adding two new EV-DO-capable devices to the Bell Mobility lineup: the Bell-exclusive Sanyo SCP-7500 phone, with long range walkie-talkie functionality, and the UTStarcom PPC6700 PDA, a communications and productivity tool for mobile professionals.
