BBM S4: Radio One “breaks records”

TORONTO – CBC Radio One "broke multiple records" according to BBM’s Fall (S4) radio results, including an all-time record share of 11.1, up from 9.9 a year ago, and a record audience of just under 3.5 million, surpassing its previous record of just over 3.2 million listeners.

It also ranked first in the Toronto market with a 9.4 share, one full percentage point above last years’ score, and ahead of perennial favourites CHUM FM and CHFI. They rounded out Toronto’s top three with an 8.8 and 8.4 share, respectively.

Radio One’s Toronto morning show with Andy Barrie garnered top spot with a 12.9 share, and other CBC local programming faired well, too. The company press release said 20 of the 22 Radio One morning shows now rank among the top three stations in their markets – first in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Victoria and Halifax, second in Winnipeg, Regina and Vancouver and third in Windsor and Saskatoon.

“These results are hugely gratifying,” said Denise Donlon, executive director of CBC Radio in a statement. “The fact that Canadians are listening to CBC Radio in record numbers is a testament to the great value Canadians place on our programming. The numbers represent a true validation of the highly talented people working here at CBC Radio.”

It also helped that it was an election fall.

Other notes of interest in the survey:

– Newcap’s Hot 89.9 station in Ottawa dropped from a 13.7 to 9.4 share;

– Astral’s Vibe 98.5 in Calgary saw a drop from 9.3 to 7.5;

– News/talk/sports station AM 630 in Edmonton, owned by Corus, rose from 9.7 to 11.4, while its sister station AM 980 in Vancouver also increased its share from 10.8 to 12.4.
