BBC Studios’ revenge thriller Reunion coming to CBC Gem

CBC announced last week the five-part revenge thriller Reunion from BBC Studios will be available to stream on CBC Gem beginning Friday, Sept. 19.

Making its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Reunion follows Daniel Brennan (played by Deaf actor Matthew Gurney), a Deaf man returning to society after 10 years in prison. Produced by Warp Films (Adolescence), the film also stars Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Eddie Marsan.

“Haunted by the past and driven by a need for both redemption and revenge, Brennan struggles to reconnect with his family and find his place in the world where he belongs to neither side — unable to fully integrate into the hearing community and shunned by the Deaf one,” reads a synopsis in a CBC press release.

Told in British Sign Language and spoken English, the series charts Brennan’s attempt to rebuild a relationship with his estranged, now-adult daughter Carly (Peake), while the wife of the man Brennan killed, Christine (Duff), searches for answers of her own. Brennan must choose between giving in to his thirst for vengeance or seizing the chance for a new life with his daughter.

Reunion is created and written by Deaf filmmaker William Mager. The series is directed by Luke Snellin (One DayWanderlust) who also acts as executive producer, with Helen Ostler (The Last KingdomCrime) as producer, and Siobhan Morgan (Malory Towers, Hollyoaks) as associate producer. For Warp Films, Mark Herbert (AdolescenceThis is England) and Gwen Gorst (UnforgottenA Discovery of Witches) are executive producers, alongside Mager, and Rebecca Ferguson and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Reunion is supported by Screen Yorkshire and BBC Studios is handling global sales.

In the U.S., Reunion will debut Sept. 12 on Paramount+ for Premium subscribers, and on Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Paramount+ with Showtime.
