SAINT JOHN – Crayons, coloured pencils and markers, pencils, pens, highlighters, erasers, glue sticks and bottled glue, rulers, scribblers, duo tangs, loose-leaf lined paper, notebooks, binders, safety scissors and pencil sharpeners are just some of the products that Aliant and the Aliant Pioneer Volunteers are collecting this month.
They are working to make back-to-school easier for children in need with Backpacks for Kids. Through this project, the Aliant Pioneer Volunteers distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to school and community based organizations that support children and families.
"From working with our community partners we know that the cost to prepare children for school can be difficult for some families," said Robyn Tingley, Aliant’s vice-president communications and public affairs. "For kids in need, not having the right tools at the beginning of the school year is an added stress and can impact their long-term success. With Backpacks for Kids we hope to help as many of these families as we can; we know the need exists."
Aliant supplies the backpacks and asks the eastern public and their employees to help fill them. Aliant will contribute $10 from every personal computer purchase program sale in August to the backpacks project. The PC Purchase Program combines Aliant High-Speed with a new Personal Computer system to give consumers affordable on-line access.
Wednesday, August 16th is Adopt-a-Backpack Day at Aliant. Employees across Atlantic Canada will be taking home backpacks to fill with school supplies as they shop for their own children heading back to school.
Aliant has also organized a school supply drive at selected locations in Atlantic Canada.
