VANCOUVER ISLAND – The federal and British Columbia governments announced today an investment of $24.7 million to bring high-speed internet access to more than 5,000 households in rural communities in the province.
A press release said $19.5 million will go toward benefiting 4,000 households in regional districts including Mount Waddington, North Coast, Bulkley-Nechako, qathet, Columbia-Shuswap, and Cowichan Valley, with details on projects coming later. Another $5.2 million will go toward more than 1,100 households on and around Vancouver Island via seven projects with Prince Rupert’s CityWest.
The funding is part of a federal-provincial agreement, announced in March, that would see $830 million from the federal government’s $3.2-billion Universal Broadband Fund go to the connect the entire province.
“Today’s announcement builds on the Government of Canada’s progress toward making sure that 98% of Canadians have access to high-speed Internet by 2026, and 100% by 2030,” the release said. “The Government of Canada will continue to make investments in infrastructure to build strong communities and a more competitive and resilient Canada for everyone.”
