AT&T to bring virtual private local area network to Canada

DALLAS, TX – AT&T will spend close to $1 billion this year to build out its global network, infrastructure, and enhance services and support to it’s customers, including those in Canada.

The proposed enhancements to network services and applications will include additions to AT&T’s virtual private network portfolio, wide area network (WAN), telepresence, unified communications, hosting, applications performance, and digital media solutions.

Specifically, the press release detailed, the company’s global virtual private local area network service OPT-E-WAN will be available in Canada for the first time. OPT-E-WAN enables businesses to link multiple locations – whether across town or around the world – “with all the ease and efficiency of a point-to-point Ethernet connection”.

“AT&T continues to make investments to ensure that it has both the global reach and depth in key markets around the world, including Canada. We are pleased to provide our local customers with a new level of choices for establishing virtual LAN or WAN connections, as well as complementing their existing VPN infrastructure”, said David Denault, general manager of AT&T global services for Canada, in the release.

In addition to the data centre hosting capacity in Toronto, AT&T says that it will increase capacity in specific U.S. markets, plus Hong Kong, Tokyo and the United Kingdom.

Including this year’s planned investment, AT&T says it has invested more than $3 billion since 2006 in business-focused network, systems and applications to provide a globally “consistent set of robust and secure services” to more than 3 million companies. The company manages data centres with more than 2.6 million square feet of secure hosting capacity in 10 countries.
