ATN set to launch new foreign third-language channels

TORONTO – Asian Television Network says it’s set to launch four new foreign third-language channels after the CRTC recently added them to the list of eligible satellite services.

ATN has been given the green light to distribute SET MAX, Star India One, Star India News, and Star Vijay across Canada on a digital basis.

The Toronto-based network said it will soon announce its launch plans for the channels.

Sony Entertainment Television (SET) MAX offers Hindi movies, not only Bollywood blockbusters but also Hollywood movies dubbed into Hindi. ATN says SET MAX, backed by Sony Pictures International, is India’s premium movies and special events channel.

Star India One is a general interest entertainment channel in Hindi, offering original programs across several genres, including action, thrillers, comedy, drama, youth, game shows, lifestyle, and original made-for-TV movies made for television that appeal to urban, upwardly mobile Indian audiences.

Star India News offers viewers 24-hour Hindi news ranging from politics to business, investigative reports to consumer issues, and from crime to the environment. It reports news as it happens in India and around the world.

Star Vijay is a general interest entertainment channel in the Tamil language, reflecting the Tamil culture in a variety of genres, including talent hunts, music shows, sitcoms, thrillers, reality shows, dramas, soap operas, and human interest programs.

In approving the services to be added to the list of eligible foreign services, the CRTC said that no Canadian pay or specialty services competed with SET MAX or Star India News. It did not mention competition in approving the other channels.
