Astral pledges support to Quebec Press Council

MONTREAL – Astral Media has rejoined the Quebec Press Council.

Headed by retired Justice John Gomery, the press council is a non-profit organization that lobbies for freedom of the press and the public right to information in Quebec.

"We share the Quebec Press Council’s vision for the future, as expressed by its president, John Gomery, that the Council acts as a court of honor for the Québec press industry – both written and spoken media," said Éric Latour, news manager at Astral Radio, in a statement. "Astral also recognizes that the Quebec Press Council offers an important protection to ensure the public’s access to quality reporting."

Astral said that its decision is also based on the concept that the public, companies and journalists all have equal weight on the Council, which gives it the balance and discipline required to examine complaints about media’s reporting.

The company owns 24 radio stations in Quebec operating under the NRJ, RockDétente and boom fm networks, in addition to the Montréal English-language stations CJAD 800, Virgin Radio 96 and CHOM 97.7.
