Ashbridge calls it quits after 40 years in broadcasting

VANCOUVER – Newsman John Ashbridge resigned his post at CKNW AM 980 this week.

“After far too many cups of very bad coffee over the years and several million phone calls from tipsters on the NW News Tip Line, Ash has finally made good on a threat he’s been making for years and resigned his full-time duties in the newsroom,” said an internal note circulated to staff.

“For those of you who don’t know….he started in the newsroom in May of 1965 and aside from some short sojourns elsewhere, he’s spent more than 36 years reading news on NW. Along the way Ash has done just about everything in this joint and through his role running the regional news network for many years he spread the NW approach all across the province and the country. This past spring he was very rightly honoured by the RTNDA with a Lifetime Achievement Award – a nice way to cap a wonderful on-air career.

“Of course he’s not disappearing as you’ll hear him doing the p-a at the Giants and Canucks games.”

Ashbridge was the host of the Corus station’s Noon News.
