Videotron adds Nuevo Mundo

MONTREAL – Canada has another Spanish language channel as of today.

Broadcasting exclusively in Spanish and with programming mostly produced in Canada, this new category two digi-net is available now in Quebec via Videotron and will eventually be distributed across the country, says distributor Terra Terra Communications.

“It’s definitely a huge accomplishment to see this project through and it happens to be the first Canadian channel that is 100% in Spanish," said María Teresa Calderón, president of NMTV Inc.

“The launch we are witnessing today was made possible by the amazing team of Nuevo Mundo TV, a group of professionals, Hispnics and Canadians, collaborating passionately day after day, a combination of the many specialisations needed for a television channel in the process of development," said Calderón. She also highlighted the support provided by Hispanic organizations and from the general population.

Nuevo Mundo TV will be the meeting point for Canada’s different Hispanic communities. Its programming consists of Canadian news, special reports, youth programs, feature stories, films, and documentaries as well as language courses and Spanish productions mostly from Canada and Spanish-speaking countries. The channel’s core programming targets new Hispanic immigrants to Canada and to Canadians who are attracted to this particular culture.

Nuevo Mundo TV will be offered free of charge for three months and then will be part of Illico’s Forfait Hispano. The channel will also be available on an à la carte basis.

The channel’s founders are:

* Maria Teresa Calderón, a Canadian from Venezuela who is an experienced producer of documentaries and Venezuelan television dramas. She also developed the Latin American market for TV5 World.

* Claire Bourgeois started her career with the specialised channels of Canal+ in France. Five years ago today, she launched TerraTerra a Montreal-based company engaged in the importation of foreign television channels. To date, Bourgeois represents more than 20 international channels.

* Ada Henriquez Belfort, also from Venezuela, is a sales and marketing specialist having worked at HBO’s Latin American channel, before settling in Canada less than two years ago.
