OTTAWA-GATINEAU – As reported last week by www.cartt.ca, Astral Media executive Michel Arpin has been appointed as vice-chair, broadcasting at the CRTC.
As predicted here last week, Arpin is Astral’s senior advisor of government and regulatory affairs and spent from 1971 to 1979 at the Commission (overlapping current chair Charles Dalfen’s ’70s tenure there).
While at the CRTC in the 1970s, Arpin held the positions of director of operations and director general, programming. He has also served as vice-chair and chair of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, as director and secretary general of BBM, president of the Association canadienne de la radio et de la television de langue francaise as well as director and corporate secretary at MusiquePlus.
In 2001, he was named to the CAB’s hall of fame.
“Mr. Arpin has more than 40 years of experience in broadcasting and has vast expertise in this field,” said Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla in a statement. “I am confident that Mr. Arpin’s experience will greatly benefit the CRTC.”
Arpin replaces Andree Wylie, whose term comes to an end this August. Wylie, a lawyer by trade, has held the job since September 1, 1998, and was a Commission for three years prior to that. Before her appointment, she practiced law with Blake, Cassels and Graydon in Ottawa.
