APTN elects new chair


WINNIPEG – The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network announced Wednesday the election of Judy Gingell as its new chair of the APTN board of directors.

A recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Community Development in 2005, Gingell has served on the APTN board since 2001.

“I’m pleased to have the opportunity to chair this impressive board comprised of dedicated individuals who represent our communities, as we continue to share the stories of Aboriginal Peoples with all Canadians and the world,” says Ms. Gingell. “With a number of newly-elected board members joining our great team, the next few years will be an exciting time for our network, and we are ready for the challenge.”

“APTN has attracted a strong team of directors who share the vision of taking APTN to the next level, which is to become the digital gathering place of Aboriginal Peoples around the world,” added APTN CEO Jean LaRose.

The board members are:

Chris Robertson, South British Columbia – new member
Alanis Obomsawin, South Quebec – new member
Linda Simon, South New Brunswick – new member
Daniel Vandal, South Manitoba – new member
Brian Smith, South Nova Scotia – new member
Madeleine Adams, North Nunavut – returning member
David McLeod, South Manitoba – returning member
Topsy Cockney, North Northwest Territories – returning member
Deborah Anne Charles, South Saskatchewan – returning member
Christine Chisel, South Ontario – returning member
Sammy Duncan, North Quebec – returning member
Shirley Adamson, North Yukon – returning member
Napoleon Gardiner, South Saskatchewan – returning member
Jack Williams, South Alberta – returning member
Kerry Assiniwe, South Ontario – returning member
Michelle Baikie, North Newfoundland – returning member

APTN is governed by a 21-member board representing all regions of Canada and is comprised mainly of Aboriginal Peoples. The Board sets policy and direction for the network and guides its mission to open a window on the reality of the lives, cultures, languages and history of our Aboriginal Peoples.
