NEW YORK – Apple is set to unveil its secretive new “billion-dollar-plus bet on entertainment” that will see the tech giant go head-to-head with the likes of Netflix, Amazon and HBO.
A New York Times article says that details on the iPhone-maker’s new streaming service will be revealed next Monday at an event held at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, Calif that reportedly will be attended by Hollywood stars from both sides of the camera, including Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Brie Larson, Jason Momoa, Octavia Spencer, J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan and Steven Spielberg.
While Apple has been tight-lipped about the streamer’s marketing and rollout plans, the first of a dozen or more shows are likely to start streaming this year, continues the article.
The subscription-based entertainment platform is investing heavily in original content, and has ordered roughly two dozen series from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Damien Chazelle, and Chris Evans, among others.
It's not yet known if the service will be global in nature or if there will be limits to the library of content available in Canada, which is the norm for streamers and foreign broadcasters operating here. One thing is known, however, Netflix won't be a part of whatever Apple has in store.
