Apple sells a million 3G iPhones in a weekend; Rogers says “tens of thousands” here

CUPERTINO and TORONTO – Apple said today it sold over one million new iPhones over the weekend in a global launch of the latest generation of the well-designed little gadget/cell touch-screen phone.

The iPhone went on sale simultaneously on July 11 in 21 countries, many of which, like Canada, were getting the handset in their market for the first time.

iPhone 3G is now available in 21 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K. and the U.S.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in a release. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

Of course, the first iPhone was only available in one country on one carrier – in the U.S. on AT&T.

Apple also touted the fact that its users of the company’s new application site – it’s so-called App Store – which launched last week, have downloaded over 10 million applications for their iPhones or iPod touch MP3 players.

In Canada, Rogers Wireless wasn’t specific on the numbers of iPhones it managed to push out the door, instead saying the number was in the “tens of thousands.” The handset provided Rogers with its best-selling handset weekend ever.

Following the weekend, Rogers Wireless confirmed it anticipated high demand from Canadians and that it pre-ordered “continuous new inventory shipments and today announced that tens of thousands of new devices have already arrived in Canada. Canadian iPhone 3G fans who missed launch weekend sales will see new stock in store and online starting today and across the country by Tuesday, July 15,” reads the RCI press release.
