Anti-piracy action in Cyprus widens

BRUSSELS – The European Association for the Protection of Encrypted Works and Services (AEPOC) confirmed that another police investigation in Cyprus has resulted in the seizure of six more card sharing servers and the arrest of six new suspects offering illegal subscriptions for BFBS, BSkyB and Nova.

Earlier in June, the first police operation saw a Cypriot man arrested for providing illicit pay-TV subscriptions to some 1,400 clients across Europe. In the past three weeks a total of 11 card sharing servers have been dismantled in Cyprus.

“AEPOC is pleased to see such swift action by the Cypriot police to stop these large scale card sharing network”, said executive director Sheila Cassells, in the announcement. “This is only the beginning, with AEPOC members currently preparing several more investigations. AEPOC and its members are determined to do all that is required to reduce piracy.”

After commencing activities in 1995, AEPOC’s goal is to eliminate the pirating of encrypted works and services and to encourage the development of the appropriate legal, operational and technological frameworks to increase the security and safeguarding of conditional access systems for pay-TV, TV-based and IP services.  Its members are BSkyB, Conax, Eutelsat, INSIDE Secure, Irdeto, Liberty Global, Melita, Multichoice Hellas, Nagravision, NDS, Opentech, Pace, Prisa, Sky Deutschland, Sky Italia, Verimatrix, Viaccess – France Telecom, and ZON Multimedia.
