OTTAWA – While about half of Canadians say that they are aware of the new Amazon Prime Video offering, that awareness far outshines subscription and use, according to new research from the Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

Key topics this year, according to its free Sneak Peek Report, include fake news, AM/FM online radio players, live video on social networking sites, and pirated television, as well as Amazon Prime. The MTM Sneak Peek Report is being offered as well as the English- and French-language Media and Technology Adoption Reports and the most recent spring 2017 data set, available to subscribers on the MTM Portal.

Highlights from the Sneak Peek Report include:

– Four in ten Canadians say that they have heard of the Amazon Prime Video OTT service, but only 4% have subscribed and just 2% say that they watch the service;

– One in four Canadians report streaming AM/FM radio stations online, with iHeartRadio moving in to top spot in the radio player market;

– Among those Canadians who watch TV content online, 7% say that they are using "pirated" TV services.  This appears to be primarily an Anglophone phenomenon at this time, with only 3% of Francophone online TV viewers saying that they streamed pirated TV content in the past month;

– The issue of "fake news" has become an increasingly hot topic among consumers and policy makers, and half of all Canadians surveyed also say that they are concerned about it;

– One quarter of all Canadians who social network use the new video functionalities such as Facebook Live, Twitter Live, Instagram Live, and Snapchat Stories.

MTM is a research product of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio Canada).
