Amazon, Discovery, join global interactive TV association


GENEVA — The HbbTV Association, a global initiative dedicated to providing open standards for the delivery of advanced interactive TV services through broadcast and broadband networks for connected TVs and set-top boxes, announced today Amazon, Discovery and Italy’s TELE System Digital have become members of the industry association.

HbbTV stands for hybrid broadcast broadband TV and the original HbbTV specification was created 10 years ago, with development work on new specifications ongoing.

With the three new members having joined the HbbTV Association over the past six months, the association’s membership now totals 77 companies from all areas of the broadcast and broadband industry. Existing members include the BBC, ITV, Google, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Roku. No Canadian companies are members.

“We are honoured and excited about gaining the confidence and support of Amazon Fire TV, Discovery and TELE System Digital, reflecting the growing importance of HbbTV for leading market players on a global scale,” said Vincent Grivet, chair of the HbbTV Association, in a press release. “The open standard enables advanced TV services and great viewing experiences on TV sets, whether the content is received via broadcast or broadband networks.”
