Hank Intven resigned June 28
OTTAWA – The Broadcast and Telecom Legislative Review panel is down to six members after lawyer Hank Intven stepped down.
An alert Cartt.ca reader this week pointed us to a new asterisk beside Intven’s profile on the BTLR web site which states that as of June 28, 2019, he is no longer a member of the panel.
Intven is one of the most learned, experienced voices in Canadian telecom and broadcasting law and policy, having advised a long list of companies during his time as a partner with McCarthy Tétrault from 1986 to 2013. He was also a primary advisor to the federal government the last time the Telecommunications Act was rewritten and was one of three members of the Government of Canada's Telecommunications Policy Review Panel, which delivered a call for fundamental change in Canadian telecommunications policy back in 2006.
As well, before his time at McCarthy Tetrault, he was executive director of the CRTC.
He is currently based in Victoria, B.C., teaching telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet law at the University of Victoria.
Intven (pictured) told Cartt.ca in an email he resigned from the panel for “some personal reasons” and declined to elaborate (he told us he’s not ill, if that’s what you’re wondering). “I figured that the timing to do so was good a couple of weeks ago after the What We Heard report was issued and before deliberations on its recommendations began,” he told us.
“The panel and secretariat have lots of good advisors on board and I’m sure they’ll do just as well with one less panelist.”
After requesting an interview with panel chair Janet Yale, a spokesperson for the panel told Cartt.ca in an email: “The Panel is saddened to see Hank leave the team. His expertise has brought tremendous insight to our work and we thank him for his contributions over the past year.
“The Panel’s timetable is unaffected as we continue to work on delivering our final report and recommendations by January 2020.”
The remaining six members are Peter Grant, Monique Simard, Marina Pavlović, Monica Song, Pierre Trudel and Yale.
