SAINT JOHN – Eastern telco Aliant said last week that it is on schedule for the launch of digital television in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
While the company didn’t release details of the service or where, exactly, it will launch (although we’re betting they’re about to try and swing back at MSO EastLink, which has made deep inroads into the telco’s voice market, especially in Nova Scotia).
With revenue and earnings up in the first quarter, ended March 31st, Aliant president and CEO Jay Forbes said, "Our wireless business serves as a perfect example of the strength of this recovery with customer growth of nearly 10% combining with an increase of over 11% in minute usage to drive 15% revenue growth for the quarter.
“We are also very pleased with our high speed Internet customer additions during the quarter, which numbered more than 15,500, representing growth of nearly 55% over the same period last year… we remain on schedule to launch our digital television service in the second quarter and plan to launch our Voice-over-IP solutions later this year,” he added.
Aliant has been testing with employees and plans to launch a version of IPTV, Internet-delivered digital television, the same technology Bell Canada plans to use when it begins to deliver terrestrial digital television in its licensed areas in Southern Ontario and Quebec.
