Aliant testing EV-DO

SAINT JOHN – Aliant Wednesday launched a technology trial and announced its plans to rollout new digital wireless network technology throughout Atlantic Canada.

Aliant’s EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) network technology – provided by Nortel – will be trialed in the Halifax area later this month. It’s parent company, Bell Canada, has just launched the network in Toronto and Montreal, as reported by cartt.ca earlier this week, so the Aliant test will probably be a short one.

Up to 35 trial participants in the Halifax area will be the first to experience wireless data speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. Faster speeds will allow customers to experience new applications on wireless devices such as better live TV and video conferencing as well as enhancing existing applications such as e-mail, video messaging, interactive gaming, and remote access to office data. Customers will be able to access information on their mobile devices at speeds nearer to a home DSL connection.

"The technology trial announced today is part of our ongoing commitment to providing Atlantic Canadians with the most advanced wireless technology available," says Chuck Hartlen, COO Mobility and vice-president, Aliant, in a release. "This technology will provide the foundation for enhancing the customer experience – providing faster speeds and more choice of wireless applications than ever before."

Nortel will provide a CDMA2000 1X network and EV-DO radio base stations, base station controllers, professional services and other equipment to Aliant. The technology will be incorporated onto Aliant’s existing 1xRTT digital wireless data network.
