CHARLOTTETOWN – Aliant is teaming up with the Charlottetown Police Department to help potential victims of domestic violence.
The telco is donating refurbished cell phones, which police will provide to those at risk of such violence, who can call 911 through the Aliant network for free. Officers on patrol will carry the phones and hand them out to those deemed at risk.
“The issues of domestic violence are real and are a part of our day-to-day policing activities,” said Paul Smith, Charlottetown’s Police Chief. “While we wish there was no need for such an initiative, having it may reduce the risk to those in these situations and help them to work towards ending the cycle of violence. We are proud to have Aliant as our partner in this initiative. One phone call was all that was needed to get the project started.”
The program, called Safe Line, is at least the second such initiative that Aliant has created with the Charlottetown police. “Comfort Call” provides officers with cell phones to give to accident victims to notify their loved ones when they’ve been involved in a collision.
