Albertans own more smartphones, Quebecers embrace digital cable: MTM

OTTAWA – Canada’s regional diversity extends to technology, according to a new series of reports by Media Technology Monitor.

The Canadian Market Report Series consists of 11 reports that compiles data on media technology ownership and usage and compares the similarities and differences across regions, provinces and major cities.  Highlights from this series include:

– Vancouver has the highest penetration of tablets in Canada;

– Albertans lead the nation in the ownership of smartphones, particularly iPhones;

– Torontonians are more likely to watch Internet TV and less likely to subscribe to a digital TV service;

– Quebecers are the most likely to subscribe to digital cable; and

– Western Canadians are the most likely to subscribe to Netflix.

The series includes city-level reports for Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal (with separate Anglophone and Francophone reports) and Quebec City; provincial-level reports for Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta; and regional-level reports for the Atlantic provinces and Manitoba/Saskatchewan.  An additional report, comparing the highlights of Francophones in the province of Quebec to those outside Quebec, is also available.

MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
