CAMROSE, AB – The Government of Alberta announced today it will invest up to $150 million, as part of the province’s recovery plan, to expand and improve broadband Internet in rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
The Alberta Government estimates it will cost $1 billion to expanding high-speed Internet connections to underserved areas in the province and “is working with the federal government and the private sector to share the cost,” according to a press release.
There are approximately 201,000 households throughout the province without access to high-speed Internet, including around 80% of Indigenous households and 67% of rural households.
“Our economic recovery needs to include Alberta’s rural, remote and Indigenous communities. This investment ensures individuals, families and businesses in these parts of the province will not be left behind,” said Premier Jason Kenney, in the press release.
More details about how the funding will be allocated will be announced in the coming weeks.
