ACTRA again decries broadcasters’ dearth of Cancon

OTTAWA – The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) was quick to criticize Canadian broadcasters for being “nothing more than simulcasters”.

After the conventional broadcasters unveiled their Fall programming schedules this week, ACTRA expressed disappointment with the dearth of Canadian programming in primetime, and amount of U.S. simulcast programming.  Global has no Canadian drama in primetime on its Fall schedule, while CityTV, CTV and CTV Two each have one hour.

“Canadian broadcasters are nothing more than simulcasters,” said national president Ferne Downey, in a statement. “We need a healthy broadcasting system and I just don’t see how our Canadian broadcasters can stay competitive if they’re not willing to distinguish themselves by showcasing the one thing that makes them unique – Canadian programming.”

ACTRA has advocated that in addition to spending requirements, broadcasters also need exhibition requirements requiring Canadian drama to air on conventional television in primetime.
