Access employees fundraise for food banks

REGINA — Access Communications employees have raised $11,585 in support of Food Banks of Saskatchewan’s Covid-19 Crisis Response Fund, the company announced Tuesday.

The funds will help provide bulk food purchasing, food hamper delivery and staff to coordinate efforts during the Covid-19 crisis. The Access fundraising campaign included donations from hundreds of employees, as well as contributions from Access Communications Co-operative and the Access Communications Employees’ Association.

“Our food banks need help now more than ever and as Access employees, we believe in doing our part,” said Tom Boyko, president of the Access Employees’ Association, in the news release. “We have been fortunate to avoid layoffs during the pandemic. It’s only right that we show our gratitude and support to the communities we serve by helping those that haven’t been as fortunate during these difficult times.”

Laurie O’Connor, executive director of Food Banks of Saskatchewan, added: “This crisis has encouraged people to come together and make a difference in our province. We couldn’t be more delighted that Access Communications responded to the needs of the province’s most vulnerable in such a big way.”

Some food banks in Saskatchewan are experiencing up to a 60% increase in the number of users because of the provincial state of emergency, says the news release. Food Banks of Saskatchewan’s Covid-19 Crisis Response Fund is looking to raise $6 million to address the increased demand and new ways of distributing food.
