TORONTO – The Canadian Television Fund announced today that it would provide $2.6 million in funding to 16 Aboriginal projects.
These projects represent 50.5 new hours of programming to be made this year. Telefilm Canada administers the Aboriginal Language Production Special Initiatives Stream, whose goal is to support Aboriginal language production.
"We received an incredibly strong selection of projects this year. Engaging, distinctively Canadian content that broadcasters believe, and we agree, will resonate with Canadian audiences," said John Galway, television sector head – English operations at Telefilm Canada. "The slate of Aboriginal programming represents a strong mix of genres and we are particularly pleased to invest in successful renewed series such as Tipi Tales, alongside recognized programs like Wapos Bay."
There was marked interest from mainstream broadcasters in the acquisition of Aboriginal language programming, with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) triggering a significant number of projects, and Bravo!/Chum, History Television, SCN and Treehouse also demonstrating their broadcaster commitment.
