CMF investments spurred $1.93B in production activity in 2025-26: annual report

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced Monday that its investments in audiovisual and interactive digital media (IDM) projects and industry development initiatives during its 2025-26 fiscal year fuelled $1.93 billion in industry activity and generated nearly 17,000 full-time equivalent jobs across the country.

The CMF invested $338.8 million in 1,248 audiovisual and IDM projects and an additional $6.7 million in 103 industry initiatives designed to create opportunities for creators and drive growth in Canada’s regions and indigenous and equity-deserving communities, according to the CMF’s 2025-2026 annual report.

Each dollar invested by the CMF elicited 5.75 times its value in private and public financing, driving $1.93 billion in total production activity, according to the report.

The CMF said in a Monday press release nearly $42 million was invested in IDM projects.

The annual report offers a look at the CMF’s economic impact on Canada’s regions: Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies, British Columbia, and Northern Canada.

For the first time, the CMF’s annual report is published alongside a full demographic dashboard providing details on representation across CMF programs.

“When you turn on the TV or boot up the game console and engage with the Indigenous and Canadian works the CMF is so proud to invest in, our impact is immediately clear,” Valerie Creighton, president and CEO of the CMF, said in the press release. “But you can also trace our contributions through local economies: a documentary crew filling up a small hotel in the Yukon, a filming gear supplier investing in new equipment in St. John’s, a Calgary caterer keeping the set outside of town fed, or a Quebec City IT contractor wiring up a growing game studio’s first office. Supporting Canadian stories means supporting both our narrative sovereignty and a patchwork of small businesses working behind the scenes. Our investments in Canadian creators and companies cause a ripple effect that you can track, economically and culturally, across the country.”
